What is pelvic organ prolapse?

Pelvic organ prolapse is the protrusion of an organ into the vagina or vaginal wall.  It occurs due to a weakening of or damage to the vaginal wall or pelvic floor muscles.  It is estimated that up to 40% of women experience pelvic organ prolapse.  It can affect women of any age.  Those in menopause or that have recently given birth are most at risk.
