What
Treatments are available?
The following
treatments may help reverse
pelvic organ prolapse:
Surgery – Surgical suspension surgery is usually the last resort
for severe prolapse. For a severe uterine prolapse, doctors may suggest a
hysterectomy. Very extreme cases may require that the vagina be sewn shut.
It is important to note that surgery does not always fix the problem and
in rare cases can make pelvic organ prolapse worse.
Pessary – A device is designed to fit inside the vagina and provide
support for the pelvic organs. The devices are typically plastic, although
some alternative materials are used as well. Many women wear pessaries
with little or no discomfort and some pessaries can be worn during sex.
