Prevention of pelvic organ prolapse

Proper pushing technique in childbirth – When pushing during delivery, the muscles used should be the same ones you use when urinating, not when having a bowel movement. It is important not to hold your breath while pushing (this tightens your muscles) but to breath with the bearing down. Practice bearing down before it is time to deliver.

Avoid heavy lifting - Heavy lifting adds strain to the vaginal walls and internal organs.  Heavy lifting should be avoided when possible - especially postpartum.  Picking up your toddler too soon after giving birth may compromise your vaginal walls.
